Recently, Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI) disclosed significant developments regarding its step-down subsidiary, Volzhsky Abrasive Works (VAW) in Russia, now designated on the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control’s SDN list. Although VAW has no assets or customers in the US, it is undergoing a liquidity assessment due to the restricted ability to engage in US dollar transactions.
Following a thorough review, CUMI recognized an impairment expense of INR 10,413 Cr related to VAW’s foreign currency balances and export receivables, categorized as exceptional items. Additionally, VAW's cash reserves of INR 12,266 Cr are currently inaccessible due to temporary repatriation restrictions. The consolidated financial results have been adjusted accordingly, and the auditors noted the impairment in their review report.
CUMI is actively monitoring the situation, with the impact assessment ongoing, and will continue to provide updates on any significant changes. This situation presents both risk and opportunity, warranting close observation from investors.
