Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Limited — Important, 24-01-2025: General Updates
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.31 crore on Tamilnad Mercantile Bank for failing to adhere to regulatory guidelines on interest rates for floating-rate loans and reporting to the Central Repository of Information on Large Credits (CRILC). This action follows findings from a supervisory evaluation related to the bank's operations in FY 2022. The penalty reflects issues including improper benchmarking of interest rates on loans to MSMEs and inaccuracies in reporting borrower ratings. The bank has acknowledged the penalty and indicated it has taken steps to ensure compliance going forward. Importantly, the bank clarified that it has not received any recent correspondence regarding this penalty, denying claims made in misleading media reports which the bank described as false and lacking basis. Shareholders should note that these regulatory challenges could pose reputational risks but no material financial impact is anticipated.
