Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has successfully commissioned Units 1 and 2 of the 6x170 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan, marking a significant milestone for the company and the ongoing bilateral collaboration between India and Bhutan. The project features the highest-rated Francis Turbine in Bhutan, designed to generate annual power of approximately 4,357 gigawatt-hours upon full commissioning. The synchronized commissioning of these units occurred in December 2024, coinciding with a ceremony attended by Bhutan's Minister of Energy.
BHEL's extensive role encompassed design, manufacture, supply, installation, and commissioning of key Electro-Mechanical components for the project. With the completion of Units 1 and 2, BHEL has now contributed to nearly 89% of Bhutan's total installed capacity, reinforcing its strong presence in the region. The company is also advancing additional projects in Bhutan and Nepal, further enhancing its regional footprint and potential growth outlook.
