The US flag was hoisted Thursday outside of the long-
shuttered ambassador's resi- dence in Damascus, in a
signing of growing ties be- tween Washington and the
new Syrian government. The US ambassador to Tur- key, Tom Barrack, who has
also been appointed special envoy to Syria, arrived to inau-
gurate the residence, Syrian state-run news agency SANA
reported. Washington hasn't formally
reopened its embassy in Da- mascus, which closed in 2012
after protests against the gov- ernment of then President Ba-
shar Assad, met by a brutal crackdown, spiraled into civil
war. Assad was unseated in December ina lightning rebel
offensive. But Barracks visit and the
raising of the flag were a sig- nificant signal of warming re-
lations. Washington was initially circumspect about
Syria's new leaders, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, the former
leader of an Islamist insurgent group that US still lists as a ter-
rorist organisation.

A South African mother and two accomplices were sen-
tenced to life imprisonment on Thursday for trafficking
her then-6-year-old daughter, in a case that
gained nationwide attention since the child went missing
last year. Kelly Smith, her boyfriend

Ina trial that shocked the country, a witness said Kelly
Smith told her that she had sold her daughter to a san-

her “eyes and skin". Joshlin Smith has still not
been found despite an exten- sive police search.

drug users was no excuse. "There is nothing that Ican
find that is redeeming and deserving of a lesser sentence
than the harshest I can im- pose,” Erasmus said.
For kidnapping the three were given 10-year jail terms.
Police said the search for the little girl would continue,
even beyond South Africa's borders. "We will not rest
until we find [out] what hap- pened to Joshlin. We are con-
tinuing day and night looking for her," Western Cape police
commissioner Thembisile Patekile told local media.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed
the sentence and lauded the work of its team in proving
that Joshlin was "sold [and] delivered to the intended
buyer" for the purpose of “exploitation, namely slavery
or practices similar to slav- ery".

US Judge extends order
blocking Trump ban on
WASHINGTON
US District Judge Allison Bur- roughs extended an order
blocking the Trump adminis- tration from barring Harvard
University from enrolling for- eign students. It had already
been paused last since last week when the judge had is-
sued a temporary restraining order.
After the Department of Homeland Security's Secre-
tary Kristi Noem sent a letter to Harvard to comply with the
administration's require- ments, or it would revoke its
ability to enrol foreign stu- dents, Harvard sued the DHS.
Subsequently, on Thursday, the Immigration and Customs
Enforcement director, Todd Lyons sent a letter to Harvard
stating that the school has been given 30 days by the gov-
ernment to respond to the al- leged grounds for withdrawal,
including accusations that they had been fostering antise-
mitism and violence on cam-
pus and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party.
In its lawsuit, Harvard ac- cused the DHS of failing to fol-
low administrative procedures, and missing to
give the school a 30-day win- dow to respond.
The university's director of immigration services,
Maureen Martin, said that the Trump administration's efforts
to stop Harvard from enrolling foreign students have created
an atmosphere of “profound fear, concern, and confusion",
in a court filing. Martin also said that domestic students had already shown an interest
in transferring or deferring because they believed their ex-
perience would not be the same without an international
student body, and many inter- national students had asked
about transferring. Among these students is
Cleo Carney, daughter of Ca- nadian Prime Minister Mark
Carney, who has just finished her first year at Harvard. She's

Following up on three missing Indian
nationals: Iran tells MEA
TEHRAN
Iran on Thursday said that the case of three Indian nationals,
who have gone missing in Tehran, is being followed up
by its foreign ministry in coor- dination with the relevant
judicial authorities, and New Delhi is being kept informed
about all developments in the matter. The remarks came
after the Indian mission in Tehran urged the authorities
to trace the missing Indian na- tionals and ensure their safety.
"The case concerning the
disappearance of three Indian nationals is being followed up
by the Consular Affairs De- partment of the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran in coordina-
tion with the relevant judicial authorities. The Embassy of
the Republic of India in Tehran is also being kept in-
formed of the proceedings within the judicial system of
the Islamic Republic of Iran through coordination with the
Consular Affairs Department,” the Iranian Embassy in New
Delhi said in a post on X.

Israel's government has ap- proved 22 new Jewish settle-
ments in the occupied West Bank, its finance minister said
on Thursday, a move that could deepen divisions with
some allies who have threatened sanctions over
such moves. Bezalal Smotrich, an ultra-
nationalist advocating for Is- raeli sovereignty over the West
Bank, wrote on X that the settlements would be in the
northern West Bank, without specifying where.
Israeli media cited the De- fence Ministry as saying that
among the new settlements, existing “outposts” would be
legalised and new settlements would also be built.
A spokesperson for Defence Minister Israel Katz did not re-

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spo- kesperson for Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas, said it was a “dangerous esca-

a “cycle of violence and insta- bility”.
“This extremist Israeli gov- ernment is trying by all means
to prevent the establishment of an independent Palestinian
state,” he told Reuters, urging US. President Donald Trump's
administration to intervene. Palestinians regard the ex-

to create an independent state in the Gaza Strip and West
