Early this month, the rasikas at
the Naradagana Sabha mini hall
experienced a highly classical Car-
natic concert by a team of young-
sters who will certainly be legends
in future in the Carnatic scenario.
It was a vocal concert by Vijayal-
akshmi Rajaram who is the grand
daughter of the legendary Harikatha
exponent Bramhashri Mannargudi
Sambasiva Bhagavathar. She was
accompanied on the violin by
DrParur Harini Srivatsa, great grand
daughter of the legendary violin
vidwan Shri Parur Sundaram Aiyyar
and on the Mridangam by young
vidwan Calcutta Venkatram.
Vijayalakshmi started the concert
with a virutham on Lord muruga
in Sriranjani ragam followed by
varnam in Kanta Triputa Talam
composed by Mannargudi Samba-
siva Bhagavathar.
This was followed by Varana
mukava in Hamsadwani with Nera-
val and Kalpana swaram in the
charanam line, “Munnavane nee
munindral” . Dr Harini ably replied
the niraval and Kalpana Swaram of
the main artist.
The Sub main was Jalandhara su-
peetasthe of Harikesanallur Muthiah
Bhagavathar in the ragam Valaji .
The Neraval in the charanam “Bha-
varoga nivarini” was followed by
crisp Kalpana swarams. The Main
Krithi was the ever loving piece
of Muthuswami Dikshitar “Ram-
anatham Bhajeham” in the ragam
Pantuvarali. The Neraval in the
anupallavi line “Kumara Guruguha
“ was dealt in detail with elaborate
Kalpana swarams in various gathis.
Dr.Harini Srivatsa wonderfully ac-
companied on Violin. Her playing
especially her sweet hand reminded
on many occasions her grand uncle
and the legendary violin maestro
Shri MSG, This was followed by
the padam “Ivar Yaradi sakiye” set
on a vilamba Kala aptly depicting
the Viraha Rasam of the Gopi
on Lord Krishna, a composition
of Mannargudi Sambasiva Bhaga-
vathar. The concert ended with a
swift pace, “Valli Kanavan Perai”
invoking the Muruga Bhakthi
rasam. Sri Calcutta Venkatram aptly
supported on the Mrudangam.
Vijayalakshmi has a honey
dipped voice and her prowess in
handling various mathematical pre-
sentations assured that the future
of Carnatic music is certainly with
youngsters like her, Dr Harini and
Calcutta Venkatram. We as rasikas
long to listen to more such concerts
in future.

Toronto-based Tamil radio per-
sonality RJ Sai, well-known in
Canada’s broadcasting circles, on
his birthday has announced that
he will be producing two Tamil
feature films.
With aspirations to make his
mark as both a director and
screenwriter, RJ Sai is taking his
first step into Tamil cinema as
a producer. Under the banner RJ
Sai International, the two projects
have been titled ‘Brain’ and ‘Shaam
Dhoom’.
‘Brain’ will be directed by
Vijay Sri G, acclaimed for helm-
ing movies such as ‘Dha Dha
87’, ‘Powder’, and ‘Haraa’, while
‘Shaam Dhoom’ will be helmed by
Navin Kumar. Interestingly, ‘Shaam
Dhoom’ has story and screenplay
by RJ Sai.
Speaking about this milestone, RJ
Sai said: “Though I live in Canada,
my dream has always been to make
a mark in Tamil cinema. I am
beginning this journey with ‘Brain’
and ‘Shaam Dhoom’, which will be
Canada-based RJ Sai to helm 2 Tamil feature films
produced to world-class standards.
RJ Sai International will continue
to focus on films with strong sto-
rylines and will actively support
talented youngsters. Announcing
this on my birthday, alongside the
warm wishes of my friends in the
press and media, is truly a joyful
moment for me.”
RJ Sai’s production ventures,
‘Brain’ directed by Vijay Sri G and
‘Sham Dhoom’ directed by Navin
Kumar, are both set to start soon
and will hit the theatres in 2026.

As India’s Election Commission launches its Spe-
cial Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls—
just ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections—a
storm of political drama has predictably followed.
Accusations of mass disenfranchisement, voter ma-
nipulation, and bureaucratic overreach are flooding
political discourse, with the opposition branding the
process as “vote theft.”
Their catchy new slogan is “Vote Thief, Leave the
Throne.” Rhymes well, Rolls well off the tongue.
But does it roll out facts?
At the heart of the furore is a seemingly bureau-
cratic detail that has ignited a constitutional debate:
the use of Aadhaar as proof of citizenship. The
Supreme Court of India, in a crucial clarification
this week, ruled that Aadhaar cannot and should not
be treated as conclusive proof of Indian citizenship.
Aadhaar, after all, was designed for identification,
not for establishing nationality. In the words of the
Court: identity is not nationality, and surely a bio-
metric card doesn’t grant sovereign status.
That hasn’t stopped the Election Commission
(EC) from pushing ahead with its voter verification
drive in Bihar, with five more states in the queue
before the 2026 assembly elections. According to
data presented in court, 7.24 crore forms were
submitted during the SIR, but somehow 65 lakh
names have mysteriously vanished from the voter
rolls—poof!—like a magician’s disappearing act. No
investigation. No survey- Just gone.
Cue outrage.
The Ghost Voter Files: Now Playing in Courtroom
3 In a theatre-worthy twist, political activist Yogendra
Yadav presented two “dead” voters in front of the
judges—alive, well, and presumably a little con-
fused. The Election Commission was unimpressed,
dismissing the stunt as something “fit for a TV
studio,” and helpfully added that if someone had
been wrongly marked dead, they could always fill
out a form. Of course, efficiency like resurrecting
yourself with paperwork.
Justice Suryakant, presiding over the case, wasn’t
amused by the EC’s deadpan (pun intended). He
welcomed citizens taking their grievances directly
to the judiciary and hinted at something deeper: a
“breach of trust” in the voter verification process.
He emphasized that if credible irregularities are
proven by September, the entire SIR process could
be scrapped.

stances—could face a legal reset in one of its most
politically volatile states.
Citizenship and the Aadhaar Delusion
This isn’t the first time Aadhaar has sparked con-
troversy. Introduced in 2009 as a universal identity
project, Aadhaar now covers over 1.3 billion Indians.
Yet, it was never meant to serve as proof of national-
ity. Even the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority
of India) acknowledges that foreign nationals residing
in India can obtain an Aadhaar card. So when the EC
previously suggested using Aadhaar to verify voters,
constitutional lawyers bristled. The Supreme Court’s
reaffirmation this week simply echoes a longstanding
legal position. Still, it raises an uncomfortable ques-
tion: if the world’s largest democracy can’t clearly
distinguish between citizenship and residency, what
does that say about its institutional preparedness?
The Opposition Smells Blood
The Congress Party, led by Rahul Gandhi, has
seized the moment. Mobilizing under the banner of
the Grand Alliance, Gandhi is leading protests in
Patna, claiming that the SIR exercise disproportion-
ately targets marginalised communities and minority
voters. In the echo chambers of Indian political
theatre, it is hard to tell where legitimate concern
ends and campaign optics begin—but the message is
clear: “No deletion without investigation.”
Veteran lawyer Kapil Sibal, representing petition-
ers in the Supreme Court, bluntly alleged that the
EC is carrying out mass voter deletions without due
process. Even Gopal Shankar Narayan, appearing in
court, argued that this isn’t just clerical overreach—it’s
systemic negligence, if not something more sinister.
The EC insists that the list is just a draft, and
corrections are underway. But in a country where
access to documentation is still a privilege, and
bureaucracy is a Kafkaesque labyrinth, “just fill a
form” rings hollow.
Electoral Integrity vs. Electoral Convenience
With Bihar’s elections just months away, and with
the EC now under intense judicial scrutiny, the com-
ing weeks may well redefine the contours of India’s
democratic legitimacy. Will the courts intervene in
time? Will the process be paused, redone, or simply
repackaged? And will living voters continue to be
declared dead, while fictional ones remain stubbornly
alive?
More importantly: can the integrity of Indian
democracy survive the rising tide of bureaucratic
misadventures, legal ambiguities, and political grand-
standing?
For now, the Supreme Court has drawn a line in
the sand: Aadhaar Citizenship. And if the opposition
has its way, “Vote Thief” may not just be a slogan,
but a campaign-defining allegation. One thing is
certain: in the world’s largest democracy, dead voters
aren’t the only ghosts haunting the electoral rolls.
