KOLKATA | TUESDAY, 2 SEPTEMBER, 2025

RAJGIR: A ruthless India

scored every four minutes on

average to demolish Kazakh-

stan 15-0 in an utterly lopsided

match and march into the

Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup

hockey tournament with an all-

win record here on Monday.

Abhishek (5th, 8th, 20th,

59th minutes) found the tar-

get four times, while Sukhjeet

Singh (15th, 32nd, 38th) and

Jugraj Singh (24th, 31st, 47th)

struck fine hat-tricks to help

India top Pool A.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh

(26th), Amit Rohidas (29th),

Rajinder Singh (32nd), San-

jay (54th) and Dilpreet Singh

(55th) were the other scorers as

India registered their third con-

secutive win in the tournament

after beating China and Japan.

India will be joined by

China in the Super 4s from

their group, while Malaysia

and Korea are the teams to

have progressed to the next

stage from Pool B.

All the four teams will play

each other in the next stage of

the tournament, and the top

two sides will qualify for Sun-

day’s final.

India will play South Korea

in their first Super 4 match on

Wednesday.

In the game, Sukhjeet inter-

cepted the ball inside Kazakh-

stan half and passed it on to

Abhishek, who opened India’s

account with a reverse shot

from the top of the circle.

Abhishek scored his second

goal three minutes later from a

similar position but this time

with his forehand.

India secured their first

penalty corner just before the

end of opening quarter but

Harmanpreet’s effort was saved

by Kazakh custodian Yerzhan

Yelubayev. But, from the resul-

tant free hit, Sukheet tapped in

from a feed by Abhishek.

The Kazakhs also secured

a penalty corner but failed to

get anything out of it. India got

their second penalty corner in

the 18th minute but Harman-

preet was unlucky as his flick

hit the post.

Abhishek got his hat-trick

when he pushed home the ball

from a tight angle after receiv-

ing a pass from Harmanpreet.

Kazakhstan earned their

second penalty corner but the

Indians defended well.

Another penalty corner

came India’s way in the 23rd

minute and Jugraj made mis-

take to make it 5-0.

Minutes later, India secured

another penalty corner and this

time, Harmanpreet found the

net. After Dilpreet missed a sit-

ter from a one-on-one situa-

tion, Rohidas got his name in

the scoresheet by converting

another set piece a minute from

half time. Right after the change

of ends, India secured a penalty

stroke and Jugraj scored.

It was raining goals as

Rajinder and Sukhjeet found

the net. The Indian team looked

sharp, and it was one-way traf-

fic as play was restricted to the

Kazakh half.

India’s chief coach Craig

Fulton was satisfied with his

team’s performance, especially

the forwardline. “It was a dif-

ficult game with all respect to

Kazakhstan, considering that

we knew we were already in

the Super 4s and we were cau-

tious not to get any injuries, we

don’t do anything silly. We are

full of confidence. It was good

to spend a lot of time in final

third and that’s what we were

hoping for and we did. 15 goals

against any team isn’t easy,” he

said. “Going into the Super 4s

you want your strikers connect-

ing and scoring goals.”

Earlier, Japan lost out

on a Super 4 berth to China

on goal difference after a

2-2 draw. AGENCIES

Djokovic beats Struff and neck

trouble, Alcaraz turns heads

NEW YORK: Novak Djokovic

was cruising along with a big

early lead in his U.S. Open

fourth-round match on Sun-

day night when his neck started

bothering him. That didn’t

stop Djokovic from dominat-

ing 144th-ranked qualifier Jan-

Lennard Struff 6-3 6-3 6-2 to

reach his record 64th Grand

Slam quarterfinal.

“What gives me a lot of

encouragement right now, and

positivity, is the way I played

tonight,” Djokovic said. “Best

performance of the tournament

so far. Hopefully I can keep that

going.”

Djokovic was ahead 4-0,

15-love when he hit a nicely

angled volley winner to go

up 30-love in that game. The

24-time Grand Slam cham-

pion immediately grabbed at

the back of his neck and started

turning his head.

The 38-year-old Djokovic

kept trying to stretch his neck

or flex his right shoulder

between points, and he went on

to drop that game and the next

one, too. But he soon regained

the upper hand against Struff,

who beat Frances Tiafoe in the

previous round and was trying

to get to a major quarterfinal for

the first time.scoresheet.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz

hit a behind-the-back shot

at to win a point in a 7-6(3)

6-3 6-4 victory over Arthur

Rinderknech on Sunday that

made the Spaniard the young-

est man in the Open era to

reach 13 Grand Slam quarter-

finals. “Sometimes, I practice

it. I’m not going to lie,” the No.

2-seeded Alcaraz said about the

bit of wizardry he delivered in

the first set. “But I mean, I don’t

practice it, like, too many times.

Just in practice, if the opportu-

nity is there, I will try. In the

match, it’s kind of the same.

If I have the opportunity, why

not?” At 22 years and 3 months

old, Alcaraz is about 6 months

younger than Boris Becker was

when he got to Major quarter-

final No. 13.

Aryna Sabalenka returned

to the quarterfinals with a

6-1 6-4 win over Cristina

Bucsa. Marketa Vondrousova

HISOR: A gritty India kept defending cham-

pions Iran at bay for an hour before eventually

losing 0-3 in their second group match of the

CAFA Nations Cup football tournament here

on Monday.

India fought hard for most part of the Group

B match but let in two goals in the last seven

minutes against their formidable rivals at the

Hisor Central Stadium.

The Indian defence largely remained com-

pact and thwarted waves of Iranian attack but

failed to stop strikes from Amirhossein Hosse-

inzadeh (60th minute), Ali Alipourghara (89th)

and Mehdi Taremi (90+6) to lose the match.

Iran are ranked 20th in the world while India

are currently at 133rd in FIFA ranking.

Iranian head coach Amir Ghalenoei had

come with a team that has a mix of veteran

internationals and few emerging talents from
