Madurai, Nov 18:
A new Vande Bharat
Express is set to operate
soon between Chennai
and Rameswaram via
Madurai, with Prime
Minister Narendra Modi
expected to inaugurate the
service in person.
The Indian Railways
has been implementing
several modern upgrades
in train operations,
including the introduction
of the indigenously
manufactured semi-high-
speed luxury Vande
Bharat trains. Within
the Madurai Railway
PM to launch new Chennai-Rameswaram
Vande Bharat via Madurai
Division, the Nellai-
Chennai Vande Bharat
Express (running on all
days except Tuesday)
has been operating since
September 25, 2023,
and has gained strong
popularity among people
of the southern districts.
Initially running with 16
coaches from January 15,
it was expanded to 20
coaches from September
24 this year to meet the
rising passenger demand.
Since Vande Bharat
rakes remain under the
direct control of the
Railway Board, passengers
from southern districts
have been consistently
requesting two new
services - one from
Rameswaram to Chennai
via Madurai, and another
from Thoothukudi to
Chennai via Madurai.
Following this demand,
the Railway Ministry
has approved the
Rameswaram–Chennai
Vande Bharat Express.
The service will begin
shortly, running via
Madurai. Prime Minister
Modi is expected to
attend the inaugural
ceremony in Rameswaram
and flag off the new train.
Preparations for the event
are currently underway
under the Madurai
Division of Southern
Railway.
