Domestic information

technology (IT) stocks suffered

their steepest single-day

decline in four months on

Wednesday, a day after posting

their biggest rally in more than

a year.

The Nifty IT index fell 5.6

per cent, its sharpest one-day

drop since February 4, 2026. The

market capitalisation of the

index constituents declined by

nearly ?1.5 trillion. The rout was

led by Tata Consultancy

Services (TCS), India's largest

software exporter, which

slumped 8.3 per cent — its

biggest single-day fall since

March 13, 2020. At ?2,242, the

stock closed at its lowest level

since August 28, 2020.

The decline wiped out most

of the gains accumulated over

the previous three sessions,

during which the Nifty IT index

had advanced 7.6 per cent on

optimism that rising enterprise

spending on artificial

IT stocks plunge on renewed AI

fears after biggest rally in a year

Kotak Alternate Asset Managers

closes $1 billion real estate fund

intelligence (AI) could create

new opportunities for software

services companies.

Investor sentiment,

however, turned cautious

following weakness in US

technology stocks overnight.

The Nifty IT index is down 22.4

per cent so far in 2026 amid

concerns that AI-driven

productivity gains could reduce

demand for traditional

outsourcing services.

Kotak Institutional Equities

said its outlook on the sector

had turned "incrementally

negative", warning that the risk

of AI-driven revenue deflation

could intensify over the next

few years.

“We expect new

opportunities such as legacy

modernisation to increase, but

do not expect them to

compensate for the deflation

enough,” analysts led by

Kotak Alternate Asset

Managers (Kotak Alts), the

alternate assets arm of Kotak

Group, has achieved the final

close of its 14th Real Estate

Fund at $1 billion. The

investments include an anchor

commitment of over $675 million

from a wholly-owned

subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi

Investment Authority (ADIA)

and a first commitment to

Indian alternatives from the

National Pension Service of

Republic of Korea (NPS Korea).

Kotak Alts’ 14th Real Estate

Apple agrees to provide India

financial data to CCI in antitrust case

Apple has agreed to submit

the financials of its India

business to the Competition

Commission of India (CCI) as

part of an investigation that

found the firm abused its

market position, taking the

long-delayed case a step closer

to a potential penalty decision,

an agency order shows.

The case is Apple’s most

high-profile regulatory

headache in India, a

key growth market

where it has rapidly

expanded iPhone

production as it

diversifies beyond

China. The iPhone

accounts for 9 per cent

of India’s smartphone

market, from about 2

per cent five years

ago, according to Counterpoint

Research data.

A confidential CCI order,

reviewed by Reuters, showed

Apple last month agreed to

supply its India financials —

typically needed by the

watchdog for penalty

calculations.

Apple’s lawyer asked the

CCI at a May 21 hearing for a

“final extension” until June 25

to file its “India-specific

financial information”, and “the

commission considered the

request and granted” it, the

order noted.

A CCI probe found in 2024

that Apple had exploited its

dominant position in the iPhone

apps market.

Apple denied wrongdoing

and said it would contest the

findings. It also refused to

supply details of its finances.

Apple has long argued the

case should be paused because

it it is separately seeking to

quash India’s new antitrust

penalty law that empowers the

CCI to penalise companies on

the basis of their global, not

just Indian, turnover. Apple

says the CCI had asked for

global financial details, which

could lead to a fine of up to $38

billion.

The CCI has repeatedly

disagreed with that position,

saying it only needed Apple’s

India financials to start with and

the US giant was trying to

delay the case through a

parallel court challenge. A judge

last month told Apple to

"cooperate".

Reuters is the first to report

Apple's changed position in the

case. Apple did not respond to

Reuters queries. The CCI also

did not respond to requests for

comment.

Startups vs Apple

The case against Apple

started in 2021 and includes a

non-profit group, Tinder-owner

Match and a group of Indian

startups called the Alliance of

Digital India Foundation

(ADIF).

The groups brought the

case amid concerns about

Apple's proprietary

in-app billing system,

among other issues.

During the May

21 hearing, ADIF

urged the CCI against

further delays, the

order showed.

Apple has also

been asked to submit its

objections, if any, to the

investigation findings, which

say Apple's App Store is "an

unavoidable trading partner"

for app makers, who were not

permitted to use any third-

party payment service for in-

app purchases.

Apple says it is a small

player in India where phones

that use Google's Android

system are dominant.

In 2022, the CCI slapped a

fine of $113 million on Google

for using its "dominant

position" to force app

developers to use its in-app

payment system.

Google denied wrongdoing.

Kawaljeet Saluja said in a note.

Market experts said the

wealth-creation phase for

largecap IT stocks may be

largely behind them, though the

sector could continue to offer

tactical trading opportunities.

“These are large, liquid

companies, and sentiment can

periodically swing in their

favour. But structurally, the

industry's growth prospects

have slowed considerably.

Earlier, the sector was capable

of delivering much higher

growth rates; now, growth is

likely to remain in the low

single digits, around 0-3 per

cent. In that sense, these

companies risk evolving into

mature businesses that

generate steady cash flows and

return capital to shareholders,

rather than delivering strong

revenue growth and significant

wealth creation,” said

Chokkalingam G, founder of

Equinomics.

Tata-run Titan Company is

taking on global watch makers

like the Swatch group of Europe

and Seiko of Japan by making

an aggressive bid to grab a

larger share of the over

Rs.25,000 watch market, also

known as the premium-to-top-

of-the-line luxury segment.

Kuruvilla Markose, chief

executive officer (CEO) of the

watches and wearables

division, Titan, said: “The

Indian market has reached an

inflexion point. Around 50 per

cent of the value of watches

sold is under Rs.25,000 and the

other 50 per cent is over that.

We have a dominant 55 per cent

share in the under Rs.25, 000

market. As more and more

consumers upgrade to a Sonata

or a Fastrack, we will continue

to dominate here.”

But Markose is also

revving up in the premium and

luxury segment now.

He added, “We have a 15

per cent share of the over

Rs.25,000 market in value, but

it is growing at 100 per cent per

annum for us. We expect a fair

market share of 50 per cent in

revenue in this segment too.”

That is an ambitious target.

It comes on the heels of the

Centre signing a free trade

agreement (FTA) with the

European Union (EU), under

which Customs duty on

European and specifically

Swiss-made watches will fall

from 22 per cent to 16 per cent

initially. It would gradually

become zero by 2031.

This will make imported

watches from companies like

Swatch much cheaper in India

than the current prices. But

Titan has put together a

multifold strategy to combat

the challenge and break big

time in this segment.

For instance, it recently

launched the Zero Hour sports

collection which spans 12 time

pieces ranging in depth

capability from 100 to 500

metres. They are priced

between Rs.15,795 and

Rs.77,995.

It has also demonstrated

that it can make a top-end watch

with a stiff price tag of Rs.45

lakh under its luxury sub brand

Nebula with a limited edition.

And, to push its premium

and luxury watches, it is

supported by over 290 Helios

stores and has also set up 10

Helios Luxes, which deal with

even more expensive watches.

Also, Titan is ensuring that

its watches offer more value

compared to global players with

offerings that have similar

specifications and features.

Markose points out that the

diver watches under Zero Hour

have a price tag that is 30-50

per cent lower than similar

brands available globally.

Similarly, under Stellar 3 —

the Wondering Hour model —

featuring crytallised titanium on

top of an automatic range, is

priced at Rs.1.8 lakh.

A comparable global watch

would be double or triple of that

price.

But can Titan compete with

the global watch players in

Europe?

Markose argues: “Even

after a 16 per cent reduction due

to the FTA, the difference in

European and Indian pricing is

huge. Our prices with similar

specifications are half or a third

of the price of global watches.”

financing support across

residential, commercial, and

other real estate asset classes

across key cities in India. The

returns for institutional

investors through disciplined

underwriting, robust security

structures, and an investment

process refined across 13 prior

real estate fund vintages

spanning over two decades.

Srini Sriniwasan, managing

director, Kotak Alts, said,

“ADIA’s sixth consecutive

commitment to our platform is

a testament to the trust earned

over a decade of consistent

delivery. NPS Korea’s maiden

Indian alternatives commitment

to our platform for an India-

dedicated strategy in these

volatile times is an equally

powerful validation. Together,

these partnerships define the

quality of the Kotak Alts

franchise and the confidence

that global institutions place in

our ability to generate superior

risk-adjusted returns.”

Anthropic expands Project Glasswing

to 15 more countries, India gets access

Initial public offering (IPO)-

bound Anthropic has

announced expansion of its

cyberdefence plan Project

Glasswing to 150 new

organisations across 15

countries, the company said in

a press note.

The newly-expanded

cohort of countries will include

India, according to sources.

“The group covers several

industries that weren’t well

represented in our initial cohort,

such as power, water,

healthcare, communications,

and hardware. And, many of

the new partners are

vendors—companies or

nonprofits that maintain

codebases that are relied upon

by lots of other organisations

around the world, including

governments,” Anthropic said.

According to a Financial

Times report, some of the other

countries include, France,

Germany, Italy, Canada,

Australia, New Zeland, Japan

and South Korea.

An email sent to Anthropic

on the organisations included

in the project, said: "We're not

disclosing the specific

organizations or the list of

countries publicly, but can

confirm the expansion includes

organizations from India.

Partners are free to share their

participation if they wish."

The statement further

added, "We are not sharing

specific organizations. On

background, we can add that

access is tightly scoped to

organizations defending critical

infrastructure, or those that

build or operate systems across

core sectors (power, water,

healthcare, communications,

financial services), as well as

national security

organizations."

The move to expand Claude

Mythos and Project Glasswing

comes weeks after domestic

software industry body

Nasscom, as well as the

Ministry of Electronics and

Information Technology held

meetings seeking access.

Earlier in April, Anthropic

joined hands with leading

global companies such as

Amazon Web Services, Apple,

Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike,

Google, JPMorgan Chase, the

Linux Foundation, Microsoft,

NVIDIA, and Palo Alto

Networks to find solutions to

deploy Claude Mythos’s

prowess “for defensive

purposes.” The Dario Amodei-

led company initiated Project

Glasswing shortly after the

release of its latest general-

purpose artificial intelligence

(AI) model, Claude Mythos.

In April, while announcing

Project Glasswing, Anthropic

had said that Mythos Preview

had already found thousands

of high-severity vulnerabilities,

including some in every major

operating system and web

browser.

In its press note

announcing the expansion of

Project Glasswing, Anthropic

said the capabilities of the

Claude Mythos preview have

sparked new discussions

about the impact AI is likely to

have on cybersecurity.

“Cheap, fast AI models with

powerful cyber capabilities are

around the corner. We want

Project Glasswing to spur

institutions toward operating

norms that reflect this reality,”

the company said.

Within the next six months

to a year, Anthropic expects

several other AI companies to

offer large language and

general-purpose AI models

with capabilities comparable to

Mythos. These companies may

release these AI models

without the safeguards to

prevent misuse, the company

said in its press note.

Going ahead, Anthropic is

working to release Mythos-

level capabilities for general

access. To do so, however, both

Anthropic and other AI

companies will need highly

robust safeguards to prevent

misuse of the model. Such

safeguard capabilities,

however, are yet to be

developed by Anthropic or

other AI companies, the

company said.

“In the future, frontier

model releases will become

increasingly high-stakes.

Capabilities will continue to

improve across all domains,

including many that—like

cybersecurity” Anthropic said.
