The Tamil Nadu

Government has unveiled

a series of new initiatives

for the animal husbandry

sector in 2026-27, with

emphasis on increasing

livestock productivity,

improving farmers’

incomes, strengthening

veterinary services,

ensuring fodder security

and expanding animal

insurance. The measures

are outlined in the Animal

Husbandry Department

Policy Note 2026-27

presented by Minister

for Animal Husbandry S.

Kamali.

A major livelihood

initiative is the ‘Vetri

Magalir’ Goat Rearing

Scheme, under which

five sheep or goats will

be provided with 100 per

cent subsidy to 30,000

destitute widows, deserted

women, transgender

persons and persons with

disabilities, at a cost

of Rs 110 crore. In

addition, 10,000 eligible

tural women will receive

milch cows free of cost at

a cost of Rs 56.75 crore.

A new livestock

insurance scheme,

‘Kalnadaigal Kappom’,

will be implemented at

a cost of Rs 31 crore

to expand insurance

coverage and protect

farmers against losses.

The department plans

to moderise veterinary

institutions and diagnostic

laboratories, while

expanding doorstep

veterinary care in rural

and remote areas. The

State currently has 3,813

veterinary institutions,
